Reading the room

A Tools teacher for nearly a decade, Ms. Pérez is in awe each year as she watches her young learners develop into thriving readers and writers. Her favorite moments come when children spot words around the classroom that they can decipher using skills they’ve practiced, like when one kindergartener blurted out the word ‘objectivo’ (“objective”) when he saw it on the board.

Let’s take a closer look at how Ms. Pérez uses writing to support her kindergarteners as Spanish readers.

Word explorers get down to business

Children become exploradores de palabras (word explorers) to write their daily message. The kindergarteners trazan una línea (draw a line) for each word in the message, then escuchan atentamente (listen closely) to identify the sounds and letters that make up each word. Children meaningfully pair letter sounds and letters in their own writing, making the activity more impactful than identifying these relationships in isolation. Each day’s message unlocks more connections!

Tongue twisters: El ratón risueño le dio sueño (The smiling mouse was sleepy)

¡Muchas gracias! (A big thank you) to la Maestra Pérez and her class for sharing their escritura (writing) with us.
